The drying up of the Euphrates: literal or symbolic?


Revelation 16:12: The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the east.


Many believe that the drying up of the great Euphrates River described in the Book of Revelation will be a literal event. The release of the angels stationed at the Euphrates and the drying up of the river are precursors to a terrible war: at the sounding of the sixth trumpet, an army numbering two hundred million (Rev. 9:16) gathers to destroy one-third of the earth's population (Rev. 9:18).


Could there be a symbolic meaning behind this great river? Specifically, might nations with massive populations attack countries where—due to population decline and a lack of generational renewal—relatively few people remain by comparison? At one time, these states with "dried-up" populations possessed vast numbers of people—hence they could be symbolically called the "great Euphrates"—and in this regard, Europe was a very populous continent.

Now, let us observe what is happening in Europe: there is a massive population decline! If this were to continue on a vast scale, would it not present a great temptation to peoples from other continents living in overcrowded countries? "Super-aged society"
